If your desktop, laptop, tablet, or Surface is lost or stolen, use Find my device to locate and lock it remotely.
To find the lost device, it must be running Windows 10 and be signed in to your Microsoft account. You can also use Find my phone to find, locate, lock, and even erase your Windows Phone.
Notes
- You must be signed in to the lost device with a Microsoft account for which you’re the administrator. If you’re using a work or school account, Find my device won’t work.
- To send its location, your device must be connected to the Internet, have enough battery power, and use GPS.
Find your Device
- Go to account.microsoft.com/devices. If you’re asked to sign in, use the same Microsoft account you used to sign in to the lost device [use your office365 account].
- Choose your device from the list, then select Find my device.
- You’ll see a map with a highlighted location. However, this may not be your device’s current location. When a Microsoft device is turned on, we periodically save your device location, so check the Last seen at timestamp.
- In the meantime, we’ll automatically start a new search. Wait a bit and the new device location should appear.
Lock your Device
If you locate your device and want to prevent anyone from using it or seeing your files, you can lock it remotely.
- When you find your device on the map, select Lock > Next.
- Type a lock-screen message for anyone who finds your device to see.
- Select Lock. Note that anyone who finds your locked device can’t sign in unless they are an admin for a Microsoft account already on the device.
Reset your password
Once your device is locked, you should reset your password for added security. Select Reset password and follow the instructions.
Turn off Find my Device
Find my device is turned on by default, but if you need to turn it off or on:
- Sign in to your device with your Microsoft account.
- On your device, select Start > Settings > Update & security > Find my device.
